This beautiful, enigmatic bird is a favourite of mine, and I'm sure of many others. Catching a glimpse of them can take patience, luck and knowing where to look.
This particular bird is a male, identifiable by his all-black beak. The females have an orangey-red lower half to the bill.
Kingfishers may be spotted wherever there is water with fish - canals, rivers, lakes and ponds. They like to perch on a branch with a good view of the water, where they can launch themselves quickly to catch their prey.
Many online resources are available to discover where they have recently been spotted in your area.
The image above is an original painting of mine that is available as a limited edition giclee print. Clicking the image will take you to my selling page for this item. The print is on professional-quality paper, and each is checked, signed, and numbered.
